March 30: World Idli Day, Let’s Celebrate It All Together.
Chennai based Idli caterer Eniyavan started celebrating 30 March as the “World Idli Day“. For ages, Idli is more than just a food. Deemed as one of the healthiest, nutritious food items, idli’s journey has been a long yet exciting one. There are many versions of this white wonder that has been reinvented over the ages. Are you running out of time? Run into the kitchen and idli is a quick fix or feeling sick? Treat yourself to a plate of hot idli, the best food for an unwell body which can be digested very easily. Idli are steamed cakes made with flour that’s a blend of rice and fermented lentils. They’re somewhat like the steamed white buns eaten for breakfast in South India, and then subsequently throughout the day as you see fit. It is served with sambar, a delicious tangy tamarind curry made with many vegetables and spices, into which you can dips the idli.

Mr. Iniyavan, who was a rickshaw driver and later turned to cook, is a Guinness Book record holder to have made the heaviest Idli in the world weighing 124 kg, Iniyavan is now attempting to make over 2,000 varieties of Idli. Mickey Mouse Idli, Thata Idli, Orange Idli, carrot idli, pineapple idli, chocolate idli are some of the highlights.
